The three cricket formats and how betting differs across them

Each cricket format moves at its own pace, and the style of betting in each one is a little different. Understanding which markets are most active in each format makes betting much more enjoyable.

T20

Twenty20 (T20)

This short format of 20 overs per side changes very quickly. BPL, IPL and the T20 World Cup are all played in this format. Total runs, powerplay score and match winner markets are the most popular here.

ODI

One Day International (ODI)

Strategy plays a bigger role in this 50-over format. Changes in run rate and wickets in the middle overs move odds considerably. The ICC World Cup is also played in this format, so markets are broader for the big matches.

Test

Test Cricket

In this five-day format, a draw is a valid result. Betting therefore covers three outcomes: Team A wins, Team B wins, and draw. Pitch behaviour, weather and batting line-up have a particularly strong influence on Test betting.

BPL, IPL and international matches

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is the closest cricket celebration for Bangladeshis. On bat, you can bet across multiple markets for every BPL match, including match winner, toss winner and innings score.

During IPL, Bangladeshi users also show strong interest in matches involving Indian teams. International tournaments such as the T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy bring even more variety to the betting markets.

bat also offers betting on football, kabaddi and tennis — however, this page focuses on cricket as the primary topic, since cricket betting is naturally the most active in Bangladesh. All sports markets are accessible through bat bet.

Cricket vs Football — key differences in betting

Both cricket and football are available on bat, but the betting structure of the two sports is quite different. Knowing the strengths of each will help you focus on the one you prefer.

Category Cricket Football
Match length 3 hours (T20) to 5 days (Test) 90 minutes + extra time
Possible outcomes T20/ODI: two; Test: three (including draw) Three (win, loss, draw)
Popular markets Toss winner, top batsman, total runs Match winner, first goalscorer, corners
Live betting Odds change with every wicket and over Odds change after goals and cards
Popularity in Bangladesh Highest — peaks during BPL and Bangladesh Tigers matches Higher during the World Cup and Premier League

Popular cricket betting markets

On bat, you can bet across several different markets in a single cricket match at the same time. Seven popular markets are briefly explained below.

Match Winner

Who will win the match is the simplest market. Bet on either Team A or Team B. In T20 there is no draw, so there are only two options.

Toss Winner

Bet on which team will win the toss before the match begins. It has no direct connection to the match result, so it can be considered independently.

Top Batsman

Bet on which batter will score the most runs in an innings. Knowing the batting order and pitch conditions is useful here.

Total Runs — Over/Under

Bet on whether the total runs in the match will go above or below a set number. Example: will total runs exceed 310.

Multi Bet

Combining multiple matches or markets together creates a multi bet. If all selections are correct the return is much higher, but if one is wrong the entire bet is lost.

Over of First Wicket

Bet on which over the first wicket will fall. The bowlers' form in the powerplay and the pace of the pitch influence this market.

Handicap Betting

The weaker team is given a notional runs or wickets advantage to level the betting against the stronger team. The result is judged against the condition rather than the raw score.

How to read odds formats

Most sports betting platforms, including bat, use three odds formats — decimal, fractional and American. All three express the same probability of winning; only the way they are written differs.

Format Team A wins Team B wins (favourite)
Decimal 2.25 1.80
Fractional 5/4 4/5
American +125 −125

Example 1 — bet on Team A (underdog)

Say you bet ৳200 on Team A to win. Decimal odds are 2.25 — fractional 5/4, American +125. If Team A wins, you receive ৳450 (৳250 profit plus your ৳200 back). If Team A loses, ৳200 is lost.

Example 2 — bet on Team B (favourite)

Team B is the favourite, so the odds are lower — decimal 1.80 (fractional 4/5, American −125). American minus odds mean that staking that amount returns 100 units of profit. A ৳200 bet returns ৳360 if Team B wins (৳160 profit).

Multi bet calculation

Three selections — decimal odds 1.70, 1.80 and 1.90 — combined in a multi bet:

1.70 × 1.80 × 1.90 = 5.81
Total odds (approx.)

A ৳100 bet returns ৳581 if all three selections are correct. But if even one is wrong, the full ৳100 is lost. A multi bet offers a higher return, but the risk is just as high.

Live betting — odds shift with every wicket

LIVE

The most engaging betting experience in cricket is in-play or live betting. Odds change instantly with every event during the match, so each ball creates a new situation.

Odds change when a wicket falls

When a key batter from Team A is dismissed, their odds of winning immediately rise and Team B's odds fall. This moment creates an opportunity to place a new bet.

Run rate and overs

If the required run rate climbs in the final five overs, the batting team's odds rise quickly. The opposite happens when runs come fast in the powerplay.

Variety in live markets

During the match, new markets open for the next wicket, runs in the next over and a revised innings total. Each change gives bettors the opportunity to make a new decision.

Live betting on mobile

bat's mobile platform lets you bet on live markets while watching the match. This feature is available on both Android and iOS.

Useful tips for cricket betting

Betting is a form of entertainment. The tips below will help you enjoy it more responsibly. Betting should never be seen as a guaranteed source of income.

Understand the format

Since T20, ODI and Test each have different rules, think about your betting approach separately for each format.

Set a budget

Decide in advance how much you are willing to spend. Enjoy betting without going beyond that limit.

Use multiple markets

Instead of only betting on the match winner, try variety with toss, top batsman or total runs markets.

No rushing in live betting

Odds change fast in-play. Rather than reacting immediately after an event, take a moment to observe the situation.

Play responsibly

Read bat's responsible gaming guidelines and set your own limits.

Know the rules

Before betting, read bat's terms and conditions carefully so you have a clear understanding of how markets are settled.

Frequently asked questions

At bat, you can bet on BPL, IPL, T20 World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy and various bilateral series matches. Available markets are shown on the platform according to the tournament schedule.

Yes, live or in-play betting happens while the match is in progress and odds change with every ball and wicket. In pre-match betting, bets are placed before the match starts, so odds are relatively stable. Live markets offer more options, but there is less time to decide.

Decimal odds of 1.80 mean you get back a total of ৳1.80 for every ৳1 bet — that is, ৳0.80 profit. For example: if you win a ৳200 bet, you get back ৳360 (including ৳160 profit). This is 4/5 in fractional and −125 in American odds.

In a multi bet, you only receive the full return if all selections are correct. If even one selection is wrong, the entire bet is lost — there is no partial return. For example, placing ৳100 on a multi bet with three matches at 1.70 × 1.80 × 1.90 gives total odds of about 5.81 — you win ৳581 if all are correct, or lose the full ৳100 if any one is wrong.

Generally, T20 and ODI matches do not end in a draw — a winner is decided through a Super Over or another tiebreaker. Only in Test cricket is a draw a valid and possible result. Therefore, Test match betting markets have three outcomes: Team A wins, Team B wins, and draw.
